Riders kept asking for a parawing for light wind. So we took development off-island, chasing marginal conditions until the L1 could turn them into sessions. The BRM L1 is a parawing designed specifically for light wind.
The L1 is designed for easy relaunch, easy steering & taxiing, and easy pumping, while also having awesome upwind and wind range. With a lightweight canopy and fewer lines for fewer tangles, the L1 is a big parawing that flies, retracts, and stows like a small parawing.
A single skin parawing designed specifically for light wind. Performance emphasis on pumping on foil in lightest of winds, easy upwind piloting and light wind steering, and comfortable stability across a large wind range.

Steering Control and Depower
One of the largest differences between the S3 and the L1 is the location of the profile break
- The forward position of the profile break on the S3 gives it maximum depower to ride into higher wind
- The rear position of the profile break on the L1 decouples power from steering for easier piloting in the lightest winds

Designing for Light Wind
For me, the 5.3m S3 redefined the light wind parawing experience. On all other parawings that I have ridden of that size or larger, the power needed to get on foil is too much once on foil. Specifically, the boost in apparent wind from board speed is so much more in low wind, and the limited depower in other parawings results in truck-like downwind pull.
The 5.3m S3, in total contrast, has the depower to dump excess power, and the flatter profile when sheeted in results in upwind drive. Add to this the more direct pumping action allowing smaller boards into lower wind, opening riding fun in previously extremely limited conditions. The goal for the L1 was to work on a larger size to push into even lighter wind, with a focus on handling characteristics optimized for the very lowest wind riding threshold.
As a designer, my experience has been that many of the desired characteristics in a parawing are at opposite ends of the possible performance spectrum, requiring making choices for performance priorities. My objectives for the L1 was to find the best balance between some of the conflicting performance characteristics:
Launching ease, stable flight in the lightest, most variable wind, and power to get on foil in lightest possible wind speed
versus
Depower once on foil for wind range, comfort, and freedom to ride at any board speed upwind.
Like the S3, the L1 enhances power delivery with a greater amount of bridle support over the entire the canopy. Differently from the S3 depowering the rear two thirds of the canopy, the L1 depowers only the back one third in order to de-couple more steering control from power delivery, making piloting easier at lower power levels. While this results in less total depower, the highly-supported flat profile creates forward driving lift for high upwind angles with easy piloting.
